Certificate Programs


Certificate Programs are an excellent way for individuals to obtain new skills and knowledge or enhance their current skill set without formal admission to the University. CSU Channel Islands (CI) Extended University offers Certificate Programs in the following areas:

Pest Control Adviser

There has never been a better time to enter the crop protection industry. Pest Control Advisers (PCAs) are licensed professional consultants who serve California agriculture and horticulture producers. PCAs specialize in pest management, but they are also an important resource to producers  with regards to overall plant health.

Business Administration

The program lays the necessary business foundation for career advancement and success. For those interested in pursuing a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA), the coursework completed under this certificate satisfies the course prerequisites for the MBA program offered by the Business & Economics Program at CI. Bachelor’s Degree in any field required.

Location: Online, first classes typically meet in Thousand Oaks.

Chemistry

The Certificate in Chemistry is designed to provide individuals who have already obtained a BA or BS degree in another discipline with the opportunity to obtain a certificate for advanced Chemistry coursework that is equivalent to a minor in Chemistry. Bachelor’s Degree in any field required.

Digital Media Art

This program prepares individuals for an entry-level career in the expanding field of Digital Media Art. Courses specifically focus on multimedia, digital design for print media, web design, digital photography, motion graphics, and visual effects for film/video and computer animation lead to an in-depth understanding and technical proficiency working in computer-based media. Open to any student who wishes to take the required courses including those who enroll through Open University.

Social Business

The Certificate in Social Business provides the opportunity to develop knowledge of social business. The course of study is similar to the University’s minor in Social Business, but fewer electives are required. The emerging field of social business is focused on the concept of using business methods and practices to achieve positive social change. Described by some as “enlightened capitalism,” Social Businesses promote social objectives/goals (e.g., alleviation of poverty) that are as important as their financial goals. Open to any CI student who wishes to take the required courses or those who attend through Open University.

Technical Writing

The Certificate in Technical Writing provides an opportunity for students from various disciplines to pursue interests in Technical Writing; the certificate proves valuable in a variety of career choices. The culmination of the certificate program is the Project/Seminar course, which may be an internship or a project the student chooses in consultation with his or her advisor. Open to any student who wishes to take the required courses including those who attend through Open University.

Guitar

The Certificate in Guitar at California State University Channel Islands is designed to prepare individuals for a career as a professional guitarist working in a diverse range of musical styles. Courses specifically focus on sight-reading music, technique, music theory, fret-board knowledge, ear-training, music history, repertoire and proficiency in many musical genres including jazz, classical, blues, rock, funk and other popular musical styles. The certificate will culminate with a recital/lecture or a CD recording project in their senior year.  Open to any student who wishes to take the required courses including those who attend through Open University.

Spanish Translation

The goal of this certificate is to prepare students to work as professional translators able to translate general, specialized and literary texts from English to Spanish and vice-versa. The Certificate Program is open to all students with an intermediate to high level of proficiency in Spanish. Students must successfully complete (with a grade of B-or better) five required courses. Topics to be covered by coursework in the Certificate Program include translation theory, translation techniques and strategies, information literacy, and translation of general, specialized and literary texts. Courses can be taken in any order with the exception of SPAN 420 and SPAN 450, for which SPAN 320 is a prerequisite.  Open to any student who wishes to take the required courses including those who attend through Open University.
