Susan Biniaz, Lead Climate Lawyer for the U.S. Department of State, presents "An Insider's View on the Outcomes of the Paris Climate Agreement." Last December, over 190 countries adopted the Paris Agreement, an ambitious global agreement to address climate change. This presentation will include discussion of the controversial issues going into Paris, how they were resolved, some stories from Paris, and what is happening this year on the climate change front.

Wednesday, August 17th from 12:30 to 2:30

robert harris

Robert Harris, Assistant Legal Adviser for the U.S. Department of State, presents "Contemporary Flash Point: Legal and Policy Issues in the South China Sea." In recent years, international tensions resulting from territorial and maritime disputes over small and largely uninhabited islands in the South China Sea have become one of the most significant risks to peace in that region. Commentators have pointed to China’s ambiguous maritime claims and its assertive conduct with respect to its neighbors as an important test of that country’s ambitions as a growing power and its commitment to international law. Harris will explain these disputes, the relevant international law, and the role the United States is playing to support the peaceful resolution of these disputes.
