OLLI at SB Zoo

OLLI gets wild at the zoo

By: Nicholas Fuentes

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) had an amazing educational trip to the Santa Barbara Zoo.  Taught by CSUCI Professor Emeritus, Dennis Muraoka, members were treated to a two hour lecture about the history and inner workings of zoos in the United States.

After the class OLLI members were treated to a two hour educational walking tour of the Santa Barbara Zoo with zoo keepers and CEO, Rich Block.  OLLI students received behind the scenes showings of the flamingo exhibit, Gibbon Island, the koala exhibit and finished the day with an up-close and personal encounter with Pepe the feisty South American armadillo!

OLLI began at CSUCI in fall 2004 and is dedicated to the pursuit of lifelong learning.  Courses are academic in nature and are specially designed and intended for older adults, aged 50 and better.  There are no books, grades or homework – it is simply learning for the joy of learning.  Spring 2019 classes are starting soon, see the OLLI website for the latest details.
