The online Computer Science Supplementary Authorization Program at CSU Channel Islands provides credentialed K-12 teachers the coursework necessary to secure the supplementary authorization required to teach computer science.
New computer science content standards have been developed by the CA Department of Education for grades K-12. As of October 2020, a broader range of classes, including computer science and other quantitative reasoning subjects, can fulfill the recommended high school math requirements of students planning to apply to a CSU or UC. By 2027, a recommended 4th year of computer science/quantitative reasoning may become a requirement. This adds up to a strong need to expand the offerings of courses such as computer science.
Starting in Summer 2023, CSU Channel Islands will offer online California Supplementary Authorization in Computer Science Education courses that meet state regulations for preparing educators to teach computer science.
About the Program
CSU Channel Islands is an accredited university that offers credentialed teachers the opportunity to conveniently take all the required graduate-level courses to earn a Computer Science Supplementary Authorization. The online format of the Computer Science Specific Supplementary Authorization courses makes it easy for teachers to fit professional development into their busy schedules.
The courses are available for single subject and multiple subject teachers who want expertise in integrating computer science principles into K-12 instruction.
CSUCI's program will satisfy the requirements for the Specific supplementary authorization (Introductory authorization is included), allowing single subject educators to teach preschool - adults and multiple subject teachers to teach courses for grade 9 and below.

The Introductory Computer Science Supplementary Authorization:
- …added to Single subject teaching credential authorizes the holder to teach at any grade level the supplementary subject matter content typically included in curriculum guidelines and textbooks for study in grades 9 and below.
- …added to a Multiple subject teaching credential authorizes the holder to teach departmentalized classes related to the supplementary in grades 9 and below.
The Specific Computer Science Authorization:
- …added to the Single subject teaching credential authorizes the holder to teach the specific subject in grades preschool, kindergarten-12, and classes organized primarily for adults.

Coursework:
Courses are offered sequentially and build on each other. They are offered online once each year as part of the program, therefore participation is considered a year-long commitment.
Summer class meetings are held online, and meet synchronously to promote hands-on interactive learning. Fall and spring classes are online and asynchronous.

The program is open to teachers throughout California. No formal admission to the university is required. Applications for the 2023-2024 cohort will open in spring. Please use the form at right to let us know if you'd like to be notified about next year's program.
Program Cost
Course fees are $300/unit. (Subject to change.) Fees are paid on a per-course basis at the time of registration.
